Gastroscopy with Botox

Gastroscopy with Botox is used to treat gastric motility disorders. The stomach transmits food downwards using a sequence of contractions (called ‘peristalsis’). If you have a motility disorder the contractions of the stomach are reduced.

Gastroscopy with Botox helps the stomach to empty better. This is achieved by decreasing the resistance of the bottom of the stomach.

Most people would know Botox from its use in cosmetic surgery associated with wrinkles. Botox is injected into the lower stomach, thus allowing for paralysis of the muscles there and this promotes emptying of the stomach.

Botox usually works very well. This procedure can be repeated at any time as required.

Botox is an expensive drug, and if you have private health insurance an application is made by Dr Desmond to your health fund for payment. Not all health funds cover the cost of Botox, and some funds only cover a partial cost. An approximate costing for patients whose health funds do not cover this drug, is generally around $400-$500.
